Module Overview
Welcome to Module 1: Understanding Trauma and the Brain. In this module, we will explore the signs and symptoms of trauma; differentiate between trauma & a trauma-related disorder; compare & contrast trauma-related disorders; and explore the neurobiology of trauma.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Recognize the signs & symptoms of trauma and trauma-related disorders.
- Define the most common trauma related disorders.
- Describe the neurobiology of trauma and its implications for treatment approaches using a variety. of metaphors, visuals, and multimedia resources to match your clients learning styles.
- Educate your clients on the key components of trauma using evidence-based sources.
By gaining a comprehensive understanding of trauma and the brain, you will be better equipped to support individuals on their journey towards healing and recovery. This module is foundational to Modules 2 & 3, which cover Trauma Informed Care Principles and Screening & Intervention, respectively. In fact, knowledge about trauma and trauma-related disorders is one of the first principles of TIC. And this ability to recognize signs & symptoms will inform when to screen & refer to appropriate services, as well as how you might shape your treatment... whether it is directly treating trauma or providing physiotherapy services or medical treatment!
In each module, there will be 2-3 lessons covering the module learning objectives. Within each lesson, you will find a lesson introduction, a video lesson with me, related treatment resources (think papers, handouts, videos), and self-reflection questions. So go ahead and download the slides for this module below & get started. Set aside about 2 hours to cover Module 1 - Understanding Trauma & The Brain. If you'd like, break it up!
